Dog Adoption & Welfare Group Quick Facts
DAWG budget is about $500K/yr. Have more than $1M in reserve as of 2015 990 filing(latest available financial information).
DAWG Adoptions through June 2017 are about 70 dogs. Their all-time high for a year is about 166 dogs based on available data submitted to the County.
DAWG no longer holds orientations for volunteers. Volunteers are trained on a one on one basis by contacting the staff through their webpage. 5 of 9 lead volunteers have left the shelter recently and so the big dogs don't get out for more than 1 walk a day at best.
DAWG shelter has about 20 kennels for big dogs, 20 inside cages for little dogs, 4 outdoor kennels for little dogs, 3 quarantine isolation kennels, and 3 outdoor isolation kennels where long-term dogs are kept.
Dogs are commonly kept in the quarantine isolation kennels if no contagious illnesses are present. They have one exercise yard for little dogs, 2 yards mostly for long-term dogs, and 4 yards used by all dogs. They have 5 cages where little dogs are kept during the day, and additional small cages for small dogs on the facility.
DAWG still uses an extensive adoption application for their dogs rather than using the Open Conversation Adoptions used by the adjacent County and Humane Society shelters. Questions include which reasons would cause you to return your dog to the shelter and how much you are willing to spend on medical care for your dog. Members of the public report having been turned down for adoption due to being at work all day. Other applicants are turned down because they are not considered to be a good fit. This includes applications for dogs that have been at the shelter for more than 1 year.
Long term dogs that are not advertised for adoption include Bourbon (at shelter his whole life), Panda (years) Iris (years), Buzz (at least 10 years), Sunshine (at least 10 years) and Iris (more than 1 year). Previous dogs that died at DAWG without being adopted include Trombone (bone cancer), Marge (cancer), Marge's son Tiny (lived at DAWG his whole life), and Bryce (lived at DAWG 10 years until being fostered for his last year). Trombone, Sunshine, and Buzz receive(d) chemotherapy for their cancer.
